About Steelhead Trout: These are Anadromous fish which means they migrate from sea to freshwater to spawn, and their “smolts” migrate to the sea where they grow and then they return to the same freshwater stream to span, similar in this respect to salmon. But they are different than salmon in several ways. First, there are two versions of this trout, a freshwater version, the Rainbow Trout, and a saltwater version, the Steelhead. And salmon come back to freshwater to spawn just once and then die, but Steelhead return several times in their life cycle. Even more interesting, the fry from a pair of freshwater rainbow trout can become either the freshwater version, the Rainbow or the saltwater version, the Steelhead and the opposite is true as well.
Steelhead can weigh up to 55 pounds, but 8 pounds is more typical. The trout has black dots that are more visible on the back of the fish and become sparser closer to the lateral line. When this trout comes back to fresh water to spawn, its colors change to be more like that of the freshwater rainbow trout.
